Sadako was a young girl who developed Leukemia after the atomic bomb
blast. When she was ten
years old and very ill she decided to fold 1,000 paper cranes,
convinced that if she could fold
them all that she would recover. She died before finishing all of
the cranes, but her classmates
folded the rest for her, and schoolchildren have been folding cranes
and sending them to the
Children's memorial ever since. Most of Sadako's cranes were
buried with her, but these are a few of
her cranes that were kept by her family and later given to the museum.
