The monks apparently "dress" the little shrines. We're not sure if
that's a pink loincloth or bib, but either way this guy doesn't seem to like it
all that much. These are all along the trails, and it is common to see small offerings
of fruit, rice, or even vending machine items (coffee, sake).
The wooden box is for monetary donations. Many hikers seem to carry large supplies
of one-yen coins (worth less than a penny) and put them in each box.
